WEEK 16 -- Chicago Bears at FHSC
FHSC is hitting on all cylinders
Dana Eaton consumes the Bears quarterback
Sonora, CA - It was just another day at the office for the FHSC. The offense, defense, and special teams all came up with big contributions this Sunday as the FHSC easily dispatched the now 7-8 Bears to improve their own record to 12-3.
After punting on their first drive, the FHSC lined up to return the Bears' second punt of the day. Shane Washburn was deep to receive the kick. He fielded the ball cleanly, broke to the right, slipped by two potential tacklers and then found the sideline where he raced the rest of the way to the endzone. Washburn's return gives him a total of three kick returns for score this season.
On their next drive, the FHSC offense went 88 yards on 11 plays, with tight end Derek Cole contributing two big catches, one good for 34 yards and a second for 23 yards. The passing game set up a 2-yard dive by fullback Brett Woodruff for the Sonora score.
Two minutes and forty one seconds later, Bears quarterback Jim Miller found Marty Booker for a 15-yard score that capped a 10 play 78 yard drive, and cut the Sonora lead to just 7 points.
With under a minute to go in the half, the FHSC two-minute drill was working its usual magic and quickly marched 69 yards down the field to score. Roberts passes of 12, 16, and 17 yards, to receivers Thorpe, diCristina, and Staley finished the drive. Sonora took a 21-7 lead into the locker-room. "We were really in a good rhythm out there at the end of the half, Jeff was able to find me a few times and we made it work" said wide out Eric Staley.
The opening kick-off of the second half resulted in a Shane Washburn fumble, as he was stripped by a Bear gunner who game flying down the field and was the only defender left between Washburn and another touchdown return. Thee fumble, recovered by the Bears, resulted only in a Chicago field goal as the FHSC defense stood strong, giving only 17 yards.
The rest of the third quarter resulted in the two squads exchanging interceptions as Brian Urlacher picked-off Jeff Roberts and then later Brent Stephenson picked-off Jim Miller. Then in the fourth quarter, Roberts found Jensen in the endzone to give the FHSC a 28-10 lead.
On the following FHSC offensive drive, Roberts was knocked out of the game with a bruised chest after taking a big hit, and David Kurtz came in to finish the game. Kurtz was immediately picked-ff by the Bears free safety to end the drive.
Again the FHSC defense responded, and this time it was Sammy Touma who grabbed his first pass of the season to salt away the Sonora victory. To finish the deal, Kurtz executed an 8 play, 34 yard scoring drive. Going three for five for 30 yards, Kurtz hit Staley for 19 yards then found Jensen twice for 5 and then 6 yards, the second resulting in the score.
The FHSC's 36-16 victory has assured a spot in the play-offs, but a Saints win on Sunday has made the race for the division title remain in the balance as the FHSC currently holds a single game lead over New Orleans. In what has been deemed the NFL's game of the week, and possibly the game of the year, the Saints will play host to the FHSC this Thanksgiving Thursday. The outcome this highly anticipated match-up could shake up the entire NFC playoff picture.
