WEEK 8 -- Tampa Bay Buccaneers at FHSC
FHSC offense erupts through the air and turnovers kill the Bucs
CB Nick Kam picks off an overthrown ball form Brad Johnson
Sonora, CA - The Tampa Bay Bucs came into Norman J. Faber Memorial Field on Sunday with "upset" on their minds. Having clawed their way up into the number three spot in the NFC South and only one game behind the Saints, the Bucs wanted to knock off the first place FHSC badly, but it was not to be.
The Buccaneers fell into a hole quickly as Sonora put up 14 points in the first quarter thanks to an Ian Thorpe rushing touchdown and a 21 yard pass from Roberts to Shane Washburn. The Bucs finally got on the board in the second quarter with a Brad Johnson to Keyshawn Johnson touchdown pass, and it looked like this one might settle into a blow for blow type match-up. Two short field goals by FHSC kicker Kevin Messer gave Sonora a 20-10 margin heading into the second half.
At the start of the third quarter, the Bucs looked to turn the momentum after Dwight Smith returned a Messer punt 47 yards to the FHSC 1 yard line. Tampa Bay scored on their next play and suddenly only three points separated the two squads. "We knew that our offense was rolling and so all we had to do was take control and hold them on a couple drives" said defensive captain Kevin Cole. And hold them they did! Following a Roberts to Adam Jensen touchdown pass to make the score 27-17, four of the Buccaneers final drives ended in FHSC interceptions. Chris Souza had one, to give him two on the season, but his brother and fellow FHSC DB Greg Souza found two of Johnson's passes to tie Chris' season mark. Following suit, Nick Kam also caught his second INT of the season, to nicely round out the Sonoran secondary's interception credentials. Johnson's misfires could be attributed to the lack of time that he was afforded by his offensive line. The FHSC defense was all over the Bucs' QB, chalking-up 6 hurries, 4 knockdowns and a sack each for Dana Eaton, Nick Harrison, and Nick Walker.
With the ball constantly coming back their way, the FHSC offense took the liberty of using that time to put more points up on the board. A 24 yard run by Thorpe, his tenth of the season, made the score 34-17, and then Roberts tacked on another 7 points, finding slot receiver Jon diCristina in the endzone. For his effort on the day, 16 of 24 completions, 335 yard 3 touchdowns, and a passing rating of 132, Roberts was awarded the game's MVP honors as well as being named the NFC's offensive player of the week.
With a loss by the Saints, the FHSC goes into their bye with a two game lead over New Orleans and will host the Saints this coming Sunday in what should be a very good match-up with serious post-season implication. Sonora will be playing host to the New Orleans Saints Sunday Oct 19th at 1:00pm on FOX.
