WEEK 1 -- Baltimore Ravens at FHSC
Pfeifer and FHSC defense steal the Show
Defensive Tackle Nick Harrison Lays some serious lumber to Ravens Quarterback Chris Redman

Sonora, CA - On a balmy opening day in Sonora, outside linebacker Jason Pfeifer and the entire FHSC defensive unit really turned on some foothill heat. Allowing only 14 rushing yards and contributing two of their own touchdowns, the Sonora defense single handedly defeated the Ravens 14-10 in the season opener. The FHSC offensive unit also turned out an impressive performance and racked up 382 total yards and 38 points of their own to make the final blow-out 52-10 in favor of FHSC.
Pfeifer had an all-star performance on Monday by turning in four solo tackles and scoring both of the defensive touchdowns. Pfeifer's first touchdown came late in the first half when he scooped up a Chris Redman fumble and outraced the Ravens 62 yards to the endzone, giving Sonora a 17-7 lead. Then, early in the fourth quarter, Pfeifer stepped in front of Chris Redman's swing pass, intended for running back Jamal Lewis, and easily finished the 48 yards to pay-dirt.
"I was just in the right place at the right time...twice" commented Jason after the game, "It feels good to score, hopefully there will be more of that coming this year".
Defensive coordinator Jim Wall was pleased with the way his team performed on Monday, "We just got out there and really turned it on just like we had been doing in practice and the preseason. Souza and Cos really stepped it up today, and Jason hit a home run, a couple heads up plays".
Chris Souza led the team with 8 tackles, one behind the line of scrimmage, while middle linebacker Kevin Cole contributed 5 tackles and a sack. The FHSC squad also knocked down 14 Redman passes, with strong safety Marcos Luevano getting his hands in on 5 throws. While great individual performances were the norm this Monday, it was the defensive unit as a whole that got the job done, allowing only 14 rushing yards, forcing two turnovers for touchdowns, and not allowing the Ravens to enter the red zone a single time!
While possibly overshadowed by the defense's monstrous performance, the FHSC offense went about it's business and quietly turned in 382 total yards, five touchdowns and a 49 yard Kevin Messer field goal. 134 of those yards and 2 touchdowns came on the ground thanks to running back Ian Thorpe and a strong showing by the FHSC line, allowing only two sacks.
The running game opened up the passing game early, and Jeff Roberts turned in a stellar performance of his own, completing 19 of 26 passes for 237 yards and 3 touchdowns, giving him a quarterback rating of nearly 140. Robert's favorite target Adam Jensen pulled in 7 passes for 93 yards and 2 touchdowns, while wide out Eric Staley carved out 59 yards on 5 catches.
Rookie and preseason hold-out tight end Derek Cole took the field on Monday and played almost every offensive snap. "We tried to slowly work him back into the offense this week, and Jeff managed to find him on that 20-yard touchdown, so I think it all worked out", coach Crinklaw commented about Cole's return to the line-up this week after missing the final two preseason games.
Cole caught just three Roberts passes for 42 yards and a score.
After an opening blow-out against the Ravens, the FHSC squad prepares for a short week as they get ready to take on a shaky Detroit Lions squad that is coming off a 27-6 loss at the hands of the Miami Dolphins. The Lions will be coming into the very hostile Norman J. Faber field in Sonora for a 1 pm kickoff this Sunday.
