WEEK 7 -- FHSC at Atlanta Falcons
More last minute heroics from the FHSC offense
RB Jacob Sakin takes the ball in for the winning touchdown
Atlanta, GA - What looked to be a FHSC route early turned into a very good NFC South matchup Thursday night in Atlanta. Late in the fourth quarter, Atlant pulled off a stunning comeback and tied the game at 28 all. Unfortunately for thee Falcons though, they left entirely too much time on the clock for miracle worker Jeff Roberts.
Thanks to an Ian Thorpe touchdown run and a one yard QB sneek by Roberts, Sonoras got out to a 14-3 first half lead. The Falcons responded late in the first half with a touchdown drive of their own culminating in a 12 yard pass from Michael Vick to Alge Crumpler to make the score 14-10.
Then Kick return specialist Shane Washburn took thee ensuing kickoff 54 yards up the right sideline and put Sonora in excellent field position. Two plays later, wide out Eric Staley was on the receiving end of a 19 yard jeff Roberts scoring strike, and the FHSC took a 21-10 lead into the locker room at the half. "We really needed a big kick return to get the ball rolling and Washburn had been delivering on the previous two kicks and he did again on that one" said head coach Morgan Crinklaw.
Defense dominated the third quarter of the game as a Falcons field goal was the only score managed by either side. Then in the beginning of the the fourth quarter, Roberts found Staley in the endzone for the second time in the game and the FHSC was up 28-13. Atlanta responded immediately mounting a 4 play 78 yard touchdown drive in which Vick found Brian Finneran for the score. After holding the FHSC offense right at the two minute warning, Atlanta again marched 78 yards down the field and scored the game tying touchdown on another Vick pass, this time to Trevor Gaylor.
But a tie game, with a minute nineteen to play and all three time outs, Roberts and the FHSC offense seemed to have all day. Running back Ian Thorpe sprained his back on the previous series and was out, but that made little difference to the Sonora gameplan. Passing the ball only three times, the FHSC pounded thee ball on the ground six consecutive times on theri way to field goal position, but the Falcons gave up more than that. And on a third down from nine yards out, Jacob sakin took the hand-off and charged off-tackle, braking three tackles on his way to the endzone and another FHSC victory.
sonora advances to 6-1 on the season, but only leads the NFC South by one game over the 5-2 New Orleans Saints. this sunday after only three days rest, the FHSC will face the very hot Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who are working on a three game winning streak having just won at Philadelphia 24-17. Game time is 1:pm at Norman J. Faber Memorial Field on FOX.
