WEEK 4 -- FHSC at Green Bay Packers
FHSC plagued by turnovers fall victim to the Packers
Packer OLB Nate Wayne steps in front of this pass from Jeff Roberts, one of 5 FHSC turnovers

Green Bay, WI - FHSC head coach Morgan Crinklaw knew that
Sunday's game against the Packers would be decided by
special teams and turnovers. "I told the team that if
we can minimize our mistakes and make some big special
teams plays, we would walk off the field winners" said
Crinklaw. Unfortunately for Sonora it was the Packers
who won the turnover battle and made the special teams
plays, winning the NFL's 'game of the week' by a score
of 20-7.
The two squads were very evenly matched for
the first 50 minutes of play. "Football is a sixty minute
game and we must have forgot about the last ten" commented
defensive end Dana Eaton. With about twelve minutes to
play in the fourth quarter, the Packers were clinging
to a 10-7 lead, and Sonora was driving. But the FHSC drive
sputtered to a halt, thanks in part to a Cletidus Hunt
sack of quarterback Jeff Roberts, at the Packer 35 yard
line. Kevin Messer missed the following 52 yard field
goal attempt, the kick appearing to be on target but falling
a few yards short. "Kevin is an incredibly accurate kicker,
he could put it through a window from 35 yards out, but
we are still working on his distance" said special teams
coordinator John Crabtree.
The missed special teams opportunity seemed
to be the game's turning point, and Sonora began to breakdown
all over the field. The next offensive drive ended with
Jeff Roberts throwing his third interception of the game.
Then the defense began to tire and was unable to stop
the Packers as they stormed down the field both on the
ground and in the air executing a 70 yard touchdown
drive, capped by Ahman Green's second score. With the
score 17-7, sonora was far from out of the game with more
than six minutes remaining to play. While the FHSC passing
game was struggling, the running game had been fairly
successful with Ian Thorpe averaging about 7 yards a carry
on about 11 carries. "The ground game was about all we
had left so we tried to grind out some points" said Crinklaw.
FHSC turned the ball over to Thorpe with five
minutes to play and began a dedicated ground game (since
Roberts was struggling). The offense quickly racked up
a number of yards and was soon in Packers territory and
threatening. Thorpe ground out a total of 116 yards on
15 carries, but it was carry number 16 that proved fatal.
After bouncing the ball out around the left end, Thorpe
was consumed by a horde of Green Bay defenders and from
the pile emerged a loose ball. Na'il Diggs was there to
scoop up the ball and with it the FHSC hopes were dashed.
Again the FHSC defense was unable to stop
the packers and tried tirelessly to get to quarterback
Brett Favre, but a determined Packer line kept the defenders
clear. The Packers did however, stall out around the five
yard line as they attempted to run out the clock and kicked
a field goal to make the final score 20-7. On Sonora's
final and desperate drive, Roberts was picked off for
the fourth time, and a kneel down ended the game.
This week, Sonora will be putting their first loss of the season behind them and should get things rolling again at home against a very poor Arizona Cardinals team that has yet to win. Kickoff is this Sunday at 1:00pm at Norman J Faber field.
