WEEK 2 -- Detroit Lions at FHSC
FHSC walks all over the Lions
Flanker Shane Washburn elevates for his first touchdown catch

Sonora, CA -- On Sunday, the FHSC machine made the Lions looked more like lowly pussy cats. FHSC's modest numbers and the 34-3 final score is a gross understatement of the lopsidedness of this match-up.
The lions never had a chance, and Sonora went up 7-0 early in the first quarter on a 34 yard touchdown strike from Roberts to flanker Shane Washburn, making his first reception good for his first score.
Only by racking up 13 first downs and almost 50% of the T.O.P. were the Lions able to avoid a major route, as the FHSC scored on all but two of their offensive drives.
The Lions tried to test the FHSC defense by reaching the red zone 4 times in the game, but were only allowed one field goal for their efforts.
Once again the FHSC defense turned in a spectacular performance allowing only 3 points (13 pts. in two games), allowing the fewest total points of any team in the league.
They also lead the league in rushing yards allowed by giving up a history low 2 yards to Lion rushers. Possibly the most underrated player in the league, Chris Souza had another great game at cornerback
with a team leading 6 tackles (one for a loss), a forced fumble, 3 pass deflections, and an interception. Souza continues to excel as teams try to avoid throwing towards the talented but, as of yet, untested corner Nick Kam.
"If teams are afraid to throw towards me that's fine, but they have been in for a surprise on the other side of the field" said Kam about his fellow corner. Even with all of the strong performances,
the FHSC secondary is definitely playing second fiddle, to the superb run defense, giving up 252 yards in the air to Lions quarterback Joey Harrington. Harrington was able to pick his receivers in relative comfort,
but the FHSC rush was able to get to him twice with each defensive end, Dana Eaton and Matt Gonzales, recording a sack. If this defense has a weakness in their pass defense, it should become more clear next week when Sonora travels to Minnesota to meet the Vikings.
Jeff Roberts turned in another all-star type performance on Sunday going 15 of 19 for 225 yards, 2 touchdowns, and a passing rating of 151. Seven balls and 119 yards went towards Adam Jensen, who scored his third touchdown of the season.
Washburn caught the other touchdown, for his first of the season, then later added a second touchdown when he found a small seam in the Lion punt coverage team and exploded through the gap untouched 51 yards to the endzone.
Washburn's punt return for a touchdown gave FHSC it's first special teams touchdown of the season. "I saw a pretty big gap on the second half kickoff that I almost got through,
and then when the punt came I just took it up the middle before I could bounce it to the outside, Dana had a great block" said Washburn.
This week the confident and focused Sonora team will go on their first road game at Minnesota, where the Vikings are coming off a 31-16 victory over a very good Bills team.
Kickoff is this Sunday at 1:00 pm, and it looks to be a high paced air battle with Jeff Roberts and Daunte Culpepper shooting it out.
